The 20th annual alumni game and celebration was a great success. The day started off with varsity team beating Mt. Sinai 19-9. The odd years were victorious in the alumni game. The alumni day featured a BBQ starting at the end of the varsity game. We invited the Mt. Sinai team to join us after the game. The kids and coaches from Mt. Sinai were excellent guess and they did leave with full bellies for their ride back. The Huntington team also enjoyed the BBQ with most staying for at least part of the alumni game. A lot of old friends got together for the festivities and all had a great day. We hope to be able to continue the BBQ next year if we can raise the funding again. A special thanks to National Lacrosse Production and Hutch Vanderschuyt for making the day a great day. See you all next year.
The 20th Annual Alumni game will be held on Saturday May 10th. The day  will be a all day celebration of lacrosse at
Huntington High School. The days activities will start as the Boys varsity team takes on Mt. Sinai on the lacrosse field at
10 AM. The 20th annual game will follow the boys game with a scheduled 1 PM start. In celebration of the 20th annual
alumni game Lax Alumni are hosting a family oriented BBQ following the alumni game at the high school field.
All friends of Huntington lacrosse are encouraged to follow their teams and meet old friends.

HUNTINGTON
Whatever Happened To Huntington’s Dan Martin?

Once upon a time, Dan Martin sent thrills and chills through the Blue Devil lacrosse faithful who wondered, “Does he have what it takes to star in the college game?” In a word: yes. So whatever happened to Dan Martin?

He graduated from Huntington High School in June 1993 and headed to Georgetown University where he played four years of varsity lacrosse. Martin captained the Hoyas in 1996 and 1997 and was the team’s most valuable player both years. More impressively, he earned All-American honors in 1995, 1996 and 1997, playing the North-South All-Star game his senior year.

Martin has positive memories of Huntington, especially his physical education and English teachers. “Kim Damore and Chris Cusumano were amazing,” Martin said. “Kevin Shanley [a classmate] and I would spend every second period study hall we had in coach Damore’s office. She was the reason I got into Georgetown. She was just a great person, and a great teacher.”

The student-athlete also liked Cusumano, the consummate English teacher. “Cus was the faculty advisor for the Key Club and my English teacher junior and senior year. He had a great knack for making his class fun, while teaching and reading things a lot of 16 and 17 year olds don’t want to hear. But I think the trend that ran through both [teachers] was that I would call them a friend then and still would today.”

Martin majored in government at Georgetown, with a minor in theology. “After graduation I decided to play a season of lacrosse for a club team in Melbourne, Australia during the spring of 1998,” he said during a recent interview.

“During that fall I worked for the Biotechnology Industry Organization. In Melbourne I played for the Camberwill Lacrosse Club. After moving back to the States, I lived in Washington, D.C. and started working for an executive search firm as a headhunter,” Martin said. “I did that for about a year until I got a job with Andersen Consulting (not the accounting firm) which is now known as Accenture.”

The pull of family brought him back into the metropolitan area. “I lived in D.C. until March 2001 when Accenture allowed me to transfer to their New York City office,” Martin said. “I loved D.C. but always had the itch to get back to New York. My family is very close. My uncle and cousins live next door and my mom’s brother, David, and his family live three houses up. So I was missing a lot being away. After about a year in New York I switched jobs and now sell software to financial services companies for Advent Software.”

So Martin went from starting on the Blue Devils lacrosse team to being one of the top lacrosse players in the country to the world of corporate America. Is his athletic career over? No way. In fact, he now plays professionally, for the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), a surprisingly successful venture.

“Thankfully, I have been able to continue to play lacrosse, be it professionally or for fun, since graduating college,” he mused. “Lacrosse and athletics have opened so many doors for me. When I was a freshman at Georgetown we went to England. I played in Australia. I made it out to Colorado for the Vail Shootout. A team even took me to Las Vegas for a week.”

Of all the places he has traveled to for lacrosse, does he have a favorite? “All those trips were great but the best place had to be Prague,” Martin said. “A friend and teammate from Georgetown who is from the Czech Republic set up a team to go over and play their national team to spread lacrosse. We were there for 10 days and it was fantastic. Prague is the only city to survive both world wars, so it is just so gorgeous.”

The Huntington grad has had a long love affair with lacrosse that continues to this day. “Along with playing for travel, I also have had the opportunity to play in the NLL, or box lacrosse, and now in the MLL, a new professional outdoor league,” he said. “Playing pro sports, I think, is every little kid’s dream and to have a chance, even on the ‘small screen.’ Going to Philly and having 19,000 people tell you ‘you suck’ is fantastic.”

I really hope that MLL makes it because I would love for some little 10 year old to one day be able to make a living playing lacrosse,” Martin added.

HUNTINGTON ALUMNI LACROSSE
Players Reunite In Annual Alumni Game

By Jerry Nigro

What the Huntington Blue Devils Alumni lacrosse team lacked in speed and stamina, it made up with in enthusiasm as old friends came together to relive their glory days. The Huntington High School Alumni Association held its 19th annual Mother's Day Weekend Alumni Lacrosse Game, sponsored by the Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education (HFEE), before a full audience underneath a clear blue sky.
Before they took the field, the Odd Years and Even Years teams held their traditional team strategy meeting at Finnegan's in Huntington village the night before. And like last year, the Odd team's strategy prevailed as they won 8-7, bringing the series to 9-9-1.

Competition on the field was only part of the fun. The weekend was made memorable with the reunion of old friends — most of whom were married and had young children in tow — who reminisced about their high school days.
Even during the game on Saturday the players on both teams, in the field and on the sidelines, were catching up on lost time. As soon as the ball came near, however, they got down to business. Dan Martin on the Odd Years team scored the first goal. Brian Kingston quickly answered for the Even team to tie the game. Then a flurry of goals by Peter Beach, Rob Hasset, Bill Gary, Wayne Sansivero and a spectacular shot from Ed Lafferty — 3 goals, game MVP — pushed the Even team ahead 8-4.

During halftime, as some of the players took a much needed break, the alumni association presented two high school players, Sidney Green and Mark Boccard, with the Alumni Award in appreciation of their team leadership and all-out effort. Mary Paar was presented with a rocking chair for her many years of dedication and development of both the men’s and women’s programs over the past 20 years.

When the game resumed, the Even team fought back with late goals by Mike Cukro, LT and Dan McCarthy. Down by one, the Even team’s defense of Joe Schuvart, Adam Ardise, John Clement, Justin Helinski and Luigi Boccardo tightened up and Bill Oehmler did his best impression of Superman by diving across the crease and scoring a behind-the-back goal in mid-air to bring the Even team to within one. The last minute heroics of Chris Pettit and Howie Einhorn were not enough for the Even team. The Odd team won 8-7.

"We had a great turnout; players who graduated from the ’60s through the ’90s participated," said Hutch, who helped organize the event. "We were able to raise some money for the HFEE foundation, make donations to the boys and girls teams, and that is really the goal of this event.”

2000 Alumni Weekend

From The Long Islander

By Jayson Blocksidge

What the Huntington Blue Devils Alumni Lacrosse team lacked in speed and stamina, it made up with enthusiasm as old friends came together to relive their glory days. For the 17th year, the Huntington High School Alumni Association held its annual Mother's Day Weekend Alumni Lacrosse Game before a full audience and underneath a clear blue sky.

But before they took the field, the Odd and Even-year teams held their traditional "team strategy" meeting at Finnegan's in Huntington village the night before. And like last year, the Even team's strategy prevailed as they won 8-7, bringing the series 9-6-1 in their favor.

Even during the game on Saturday the players on both team, in the field and on the sidelines. were catching up on lost time. As soon as the ball came near, though , they got down to business

Tim Maher on the Odd team scored the first goal. But Ian Ritcey quickly answered for the Even team to tie the game. Then a flurry of goals by Andy Pettit (2 goals), Brian Flynn, Brendan Carry, Ritcey, and a spectacular behind the back shot from Jude Desiderio (game MVP), pushed the Even team ahead 8-4.

During halftime, as some of the players took a much needed break, the alumni association presented two high school players, Ryan Laffey and Joanna Perini, with the Alumni Award in appreciation of their team leadership and all-out effort.

When the game resumed, the Odd team fought back with late goals by Maher and Chris Alnwick. Down by one , the Odd team nearly time the game in the final minute but Alnwick's shot was negated because he was called in the crease. The Even team won 8-7.

A the weekend came to a close, both teams headed back to Finnegan's to watch the Georgetown/Cornell Lacrosse game.

"We had a good turnout," said Jerry NIgro who helped organize the event. "We ere able to raise some money for the foundation, make donations to the boys and girls teams and that is really the goal of this event.

The Huntington Alumni game is co-sponsored by the Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education, a not for profit organization dedicated to the enhancing education opportunities for students within the the school district "

Bystander

The the weather held up and another alumni weekend has passed.  The turn out was small but a good time was had by all.  I don't know who won but I believe that it was decided in the last minute.  The Grey (even years) and the Blue (odd years) took turns dominating play, with the score going back and forth.  There was a good crowd on hand to watch the old timers and reminisce with old friends. The most fun part every year is to hear the old-timers that played under current coach Paul McDermott relentlessly yell out all game; orders to Paul: bend over, scoop with two hands, pass the ball, don't throw across field, get back on defense, don't hold the ball, move the ball, etc.  Hutch, at 53, is still great in goal, showing fast reflexes and great outlet passes.  Current defensive coach Scott McGilvray was playing in his first alumni game; while looking a little rusty, he gave a good showing.  Also, showing up and playing in his first alumni game and scrambling to get equipment was Bart Orr of this years Navy team. Other players such as Dan Martin and Brendan Carry gave a good show for the fans and looked as good as ever.  Andy Pettit looked a little slow this year.  Andy Thompson, as usual, got a slashing penalty but played under a little more control; must be the age factor.  Spotted at the game were former coaches Aaron Littman and Steve Davis.  Glen McGilvray was there taking photos and some will be posted in the near future.

At half time the boys alumni award was presented to Ryan Laffey, one of the captains of this years blue devils team.

I will try to get a list from Jerry Nigro of all who showed up and those who contributed to his alumni game.
