Finley Boys Lacrosse Continues Era of Excellence with 10-0 Record 7/1

There are few constants in life but time has proven that one of them is that each spring the boys lacrosse team at Finley Middle School will be among Suffolk’s best.

This year’s 45 player Falcon squad didn’t disappoint, storming to a perfect 10-0 under the tutelage of veteran coach Rick Eriksen. With a roster packed with talented athletes, this team shined, outscoring its opponents 111-28.

Captained by Zachary Howell, Dan Mackey and Brian Straub, the team was a "great group of guys, very hardworking," according to Eriksen. The coach said that Howell was a "great leader, the ‘go to’ guy," who sparkled at his midfielder position. Straub anchored the defense and Mackey showed "great hustle" while playing attack.

Finley’s arsenal included brothers Rhamel and Shamel Bratton, aptly described by Eriksen as "very competitive, intense players." The pair helped solidify the midfield for the Falcons. Midfielder Brett Olsen combined great moves with a strong work ethic and "Mr. Hustle" Fred Catanese showed fancy stick work.

Up and down the roster Finley had players that must have been the envy of opposing coaches. Athletes like midfielder Ryan Coughlan, who Eriksen said was the team’s most improved player, and defenseman Greg Quartier, who showed a knack for clearing balls and the tenacious Ryan Askerberg, still another defensive standout.

Is it any surprise that Finley skated through the season without knowing defeat when it can field a team with more depth than two teams combined?

Goalkeepers Ryan Brady and Brian Baisley "both stopped many shots and were great clearers," Eriksen said. The coach also complimented the play of Sam Cutrone, a defenseman and long stick midfielder, Kashif Clark ("little guy, big heart"), Chris Ackerly, who combined "speed and stick" on attack, Brian Pomper ("always seemed to get open), another attackman, Mike Tinari ("more groundballs than anyone"), defenseman Dave Motley ("tough player"), the "very much improved" midfielder Rob Corcoran, attackman Justin Hawkins ("good worker") and attackman Joe Askerberg.

With 18 players returning next spring, the Finley lacrosse dynasty appears well positioned to continue its amazing run of championship seasons.
