HISTORY RELATED TO Huntington

The early college championships team usually had a few players from Huntington High. In 1957 there were only a few teams playing lacrosse on Long Island.  Huntington, with equipment borrowed from Sewanhaka, started lacrosse under the guidance of Mr. Loughlin.  The sport was one that Huntington was able to excel after a few years.  In 1960, third season, the Blue Devils were able to place 3rd in the Long Island league under new coach Cliff Murray.  The sport started to expand in Suffolk County and the two counties started to play for the Long Island championship in 1961.  Huntington won the Suffolk championship in 1961.  In 1962 Paul Sullivan coached the Blue Devils to second place in the Suffolk league.  Cliff Murray was again at the helm in 1963 and led the Blue Devils to the Suffolk county championship. They lost the Long Island Championship game.  This was the first of 6 straight Suffolk County Championships.  In 1965 the Blue Devils were to win their first Long Island Championship with an exciting win over Manhasset.  Cliff Murray guided the 1968 Blue Devils to a 16 & 2 season.  The Long Island Championship game was not played that year; the first and only time the game has not been played.

The tradition continued for many years with the Blue Devils playing for the Suffolk County championship, 7 out of the next 8 years.  During that time, Huntington played in 4 more Long Island championships, wining in 1975.  As the sport grew in Suffolk County and enrollment in Huntington student population started to decline, so did the fortunes of the Huntington lacrosse program.  Teams have still been very competitive but they have not been to the Suffolk county Championship from 1982, till 1999.  The program has produced some of the best players in the world, including Jim Burke who played on two World Teams and was considered the best defense player in the world for many years.
