Huntington @ Smithtown |
In a early season contest between two top teams in their respective classes, the teams met in a high energy game. Each team made many unforced errors; the ball went up and down the field all game. Smithtown took the momentum in the second quarter, out scoring the Devils 4-2. The game was tied at the half 5-5. Smithtown broke the tie with eight minutes left in the game on a pass on a back door cut to a player breaking in one on one with the Huntington goalie Charlie Parr. Huntington pressed the action creating a few good opportunities but they could not get the ball pass the Smithtown goalie. Smithtown was able to take advantage of the Huntington; they pressed to get the ball back. Smithtown, on the clear, found a middie sprinting open up field all alone breaking free to put the game away for Smithtown. Final Smithtown- 9 Huntington - 7. | Comsewogue @ Huntington May 27th Semi Final Playoff Game (Deja Blue) |
In an classic battle, Comsewogue played the Huntington Blue Devil at Huntington High School. Each team had scouted each other well with Comsewogue making sure to cover Tim McAleavey no matter where the ball was on the field. Huntington defense tried to deny Comsewogue's Mike Gongas the ball with Eric Posner face guarding him throughout the game. They followed Gongas all over the field. Gongas only got the ball when there was a whistle giving possession to Comsewogue. Both teams strategies work well as both teams had to look for other options within there offense. Comsewogue took control of the early part of the first quarter scoring the first three goals of the game. One goal was an EMO goal and the third goal was scored by a middie driving from the top beating Huntington goalie Billy Liedke to his offside with a low bounce shot. Huntington got on the scoreboard with a nice shot by Pat Nastro to the upper corner that rang the pipe off the feed from Billy Kingston to close out the first quarter scoring. Comsewogue led after one quarter 3-1. Huntington killed two man down situations at the beginning of the second quarter. After failing to score while man up, Comsewogue got a fast break goal to up their lead to 4-1. Huntington came right back on goals by Pierre Delva; the first coming on a cut to the the goal and the good pass by Brandon Logigian. Delva took the ensuing face-off right to the cage shooting on the run for his second goal as Huntington cut into the lead 4-3; the score at half time. In the second half, both teams were more deliberate with the ball looking to control the pace of the game. Huntington's McAleavey got things started as he turned playmaker passing to Delva who tied the score for the Devils at 4-4. Comsewogue answered back to regain the lead at 5-4. Huntington was able to counter with a fast break goal as Scott Kocis brought the ball up field passing to Logigian who passed to John Kingston who was left with only the goalie to beat putting it pass him as the goalie charge out to knock Kingston down before he could shoot but did not get there in time. The score at the end of three quarters 5-5. The fourth quarter was intense with each team trying to hold down the other team with hard nosed defense. Comsewogue was the first to score in the last quarter taking the lead at 6-5. Huntington kept up the battle as McAleavey finally got in the scoring column off the nice feed from Logigian tying the score at 6-6. It stayed that way until about 2 minutes left when Comsewogue took the lead making it 7-6. Huntington had a couple of good looks but were unable to put on past the Comsewogue goalie. At about the two minute mark, the scoreboard clock was turned off and the official time was being kept on the field by the time keeper and the near side referee. The crowd was yelling that the time keep failed to start the clock. Huntington's Logigian was breaking free to the goal when the far side referee stopped the game to reset the clock taking a clear one on one with the goalie away from the Devils. The whistle was inadvertent as the near side referee had instructed the time keeper to the field with the clock. Huntington came away empty on that possession. Comsewogue then tried to run out the clock but a great check striped the Comsewogue player knocking the ball outside the box with only 30 seconds on the clock. Huntington got the ball into the offensive end for one last try at tying the score. The Devils missed the shot but they regained possession with only two seconds on the scoreboard. The official time was being kept on the field so the scoreboard clock might not have been the same as the clock on the field. Logigian zipped the pass to the crease with McAleavey grabbing the ball quick sticking for the tying score as the final horned end the game. The referees ruled that the ball was in the cage before the horn ended the game. For the second year in a row Huntington headed into overtime (sudden death) in the Suffolk Class B semi final game. Comsewogue won the face off and called time out immediately to set up the play. Mike Gongas took the ball at the midfield line driving to the goal with the Huntington defender all over him. As he got closer to the cage Huntington defense slid to double team the ball and while being checked by two men a falling Gongas put the ball in the cage for the winning goal. Final score Comsewogue 8 - Huntington -7. The players and fans from both sides were great. This was a game that no one deserved to lose. This was one of the great contests of the 2003 season.
