2003 Game Summaries

Comsewogue @ Huntington May 27th Semi Final Playoff Game (Deja Blue)

In an classic battle, Comsewogue played the Huntington Blue Devil at Huntington High School. Each team had scouted each other well with Comsewogue making sure to cover Tim McAleavey no matter where the ball was on the field. Huntington defense tried to deny Comsewogue's Mike Gongas the ball with Eric Posner face guarding him throughout the game. They followed Gongas all over the field. Gongas only got the ball when there was a whistle giving possession to Comsewogue. Both teams strategies work well as both teams had to look for other options within there offense. Comsewogue took control of the early part of the first quarter scoring the first three goals of the game.  One goal was an EMO goal and the third goal was scored by a middie driving from the top beating Huntington goalie Billy Liedke to his offside with a low bounce shot.  Huntington got on the scoreboard with a nice shot by Pat Nastro to the upper corner that rang the pipe off the feed from Billy Kingston to close out the first quarter scoring. Comsewogue led after one quarter 3-1.

Huntington killed two man down situations at the beginning of the second quarter. After failing to score while man up, Comsewogue got a fast break goal to up their lead to 4-1. Huntington came right back on goals by Pierre Delva; the first coming on a cut to the the goal and the good pass by Brandon Logigian. Delva took the ensuing face-off right to the cage shooting on the run for his second goal as Huntington cut into the lead 4-3; the score at half time. In the second half, both teams were more deliberate with the ball looking to control the pace of the game. Huntington's McAleavey got things started as he turned playmaker passing to Delva who tied the score for the Devils at 4-4.  Comsewogue answered back to regain the lead at 5-4. Huntington was able to counter with a fast break goal as Scott Kocis brought the ball up field passing to Logigian who passed to John Kingston who was left with only the goalie to beat putting it pass him as the goalie charge out to knock Kingston down before he could shoot but did not get there in time.  The score at the end of three quarters 5-5.

The fourth quarter was intense with each team trying to hold down the other team with hard nosed defense. Comsewogue was the first to score in the last quarter taking the lead at 6-5. Huntington kept up the battle as McAleavey finally got in the scoring column off the nice feed from Logigian tying the score at 6-6. It stayed that way until about 2 minutes left when Comsewogue took the lead making it 7-6. Huntington had a couple of good looks but were unable to put on past the Comsewogue goalie. At about the two minute mark, the scoreboard clock was turned off and the official time was being kept on the field by the time keeper and the near side referee. The crowd was yelling that the time keep failed to start the clock. Huntington's Logigian was breaking free to the goal when the far side referee stopped the game to reset the clock taking a clear one on one with the goalie away from the Devils. The whistle was inadvertent as the near side referee had instructed the time keeper to the field with the clock. Huntington came away empty on that possession.   Comsewogue then tried to run out the clock but a great check striped the Comsewogue player knocking the ball outside the box with only 30 seconds on the clock. Huntington got the ball into the offensive end for one last try at tying the score. The Devils missed the shot but they regained possession with only two seconds on the scoreboard. The official time was being kept on the field so the scoreboard clock might not have been the same as the clock on the field. Logigian zipped the pass to the crease with McAleavey grabbing the ball quick sticking for the tying score as the final horned end the game. The referees ruled that the ball was in the cage before the horn ended the game.

For the second year in a row Huntington headed into overtime (sudden death) in the Suffolk Class B semi final game. Comsewogue won the face off and called time out immediately to set up the play. Mike Gongas took the ball at the midfield line driving to the goal with the Huntington defender all over him. As he got closer to the cage Huntington defense slid to double team the ball and while being checked by two men a falling Gongas put the ball in the cage for the winning goal. Final score Comsewogue 8 - Huntington -7. The players and fans from both sides were great. This was a game that no one deserved to lose. This was one of the great contests of the 2003 season.

Comsewogue @ Huntington April 15th 2003
This game was a battle from start to finish with the momentum going back and forth. Comsewogue controlled the ball at the beginning of the first quarter but Huntington stuck first on a length of the field dash by defenseman Chase Caruso who passed it to Brandon Logigian for the goal.  Comsewogue tied the game at 1-1 on a ISO dodge and shot. Pat Nastro put Huntington back in front before the end of the first quarter to give the Devils the lead 2-1. The devils  got on the board first in the second quarter as John Fulton passed to a cutting Tim McAleavey to put the devils up 3-1.  Comsewogue got the next three goals put the Warriors up at the half 4-3. The last goal came on a great shot from from just inside the restraining line by Gongas with only 2 seconds on the clock.  Huntington came out and scored the first goal to tie it at 4-4 as Billy Kingston put a low shot past the goalie off the feed from Logigian.  Comsewogue did not let down scoring the next goal to take the lead back 5- 4. Fulton got his second assist on the feed to McAleavey who put it in from the outside with underhand bullet. With the score tied at 5-5 Fulton hit John Kingston with the feed to give the devils lead 6-5. McAleavey intercepted the clearing pass from the Comsewogue goalie to get an easy goal to extend Huntington lead to 2 goals. The Comsewogue coach pull his goalie after that play. Gongas got Comsewogue back in the game with a goal to make it 7- 6 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Huntington was able to take command of the game as goalie Charlie Paar who was playing LSM today striped the ball from his man picking up the loose ball and passing to a breaking middie Mike Laffey who weaved his way the length of the field to score on the second Comsewogue goalie to give the devils a 2 goal lead 8 - 6. Huntington extend the lead to 3 goals as Logigian scored to make it 9 - 6. Huntington then took two penalties in a row giving Comsewogue a two man advantage. Huntington killed one penalty before Comsewogue scored to cut into the Huntington's lead 9- 7,  which was the final score as Huntington was able to kill the last 2 minutes. Simple put a great game on a great day.
Hills West @ Huntington March 28th 2003
Pierre Delva got Huntington off to fast start, winning the face-off and racing to he cage scoring only 10 seconds into the game. Hills answered to tie it at 1-1. Huntington went ahead again as defenseman Chase Caruso raced up field passing to Tim McAleavey for the score.  Next sophomore Billy Kingston got his first varsity goal on a drive from the restraining line. On the face-off Delva broke up field for the fast break passing to Nastro who scored to give the Devils a 4-1 lead. Hills cut into the lead with goal. Brandon Logigian closed out the first quarter scoring, making it 5-2 at the end of one quarter. Huntington scored the first three goals of the second quarter to extend the lead to 6 goals. John Fulton to McAleavey then Nastro unassisted and McAleavey from Logigian. Hills stopped the run with a goal. The devils got that one back as McAleavey knocked down the goalies pass, picked up the loose ball and shot for the easy goal. Logigian extend the lead with a goal to make it 10-3 at the half. Hills got the first goal of the second half. Huntington's Nastro got that one right back as he scored unassisted and Caruso got his second assist on the score by McAleavey his 6th of the game. Hills kept fighting and working hard getting the next goal. Hills scored the first goal of the 4th quarter to make the score 12-6. McAleavey finished up the devil's scoring getting his 7th of the game. Hills tested Billy Liedke on a couple of shots but they only got one by him,  making the final score Huntington 13 Hills West 7.
St. Anthony's @ Huntington (see below for Newsday write-up)
The first game of the year was barn burner. Huntington took the first quarter lead 3-2. Tim McAleavey scored two goals and John Kingston got one. The score was tie midway through the second period 3 - 3  and St. Anthony's controlled most of the action for the remainder of the half. Goalie Billy Liedke made a couple of excellent saves to hold St. Anthony's to only one goal as St. Anthony's lead at half 4-3. St. Anthony's continued to control the action at the beginning of the second half and most of the third quarter;  they were able to extend their lead to 7 -3. Huntington continued to battle and slowly pickup the pace as Charlie Paar made some good saves to hold down St. Anthony's. John Fulton sparked the Devil's offense, assisting on a goal by McAleavey near the end of the third quarter. The Devils kept the momentum into the fourth quarter on Brandon Logigian's first goal of the game. Then Tim McAleavey scored on a great shot, coming around the left side making it 7 - 6.  St Anthony's looking to take control back scored the next goal to give them a 2 goal lead 8-6.  Huntington bounced right back with Logigian driving from the restraining line firing the shot high making it a one goal game with just over two minutes to go.  In the last two minutes both teams missed opportunities to score. St. Anthony's was able to keep the ball in the box running out the clock.

John Pagano's heart beat like a drum, pounding faster as the ball drew closer. The St. Anthony's goalie heard nothing else - not the raspy screams from the sideline, the crunching of equipment and not the gasps from the crowd - except for his racing heart.

Pagano somehow blocked it all out - then blocked the shot. He stuffed Brandon Logigian's low shot on a stick save - the last of his eight stops - with 48 seconds left to preserve St. Anthony's one-goal lead in its 8-7 win over Huntington yesterday in a season-opening, non-league boys lacrosse game.

"I knew he was going to shoot it," the USMMA-bound senior from West Islip said. "I had to come up with that save."

Logigian weaved through four defenders at midfield, spinning and slipping out of their grasps, as he charged toward the cage. Logigian, a Harvard-bound senior who had 30 goals and 55 assists last season, drew the defense away from teammate Tim McAleavey (three goals) and challenged Pagano with a short-hop attempt.

"It was just a great save," Logigian said. "He probably was the game MVP."

Logigian cut Huntington's deficit to 7-6 when he finished McAleavey's feed from behind the cage to cap a three- goal spurt with six minutes left.

Roger Wieland countered with what proved to the be the winner. He stunned most of the crowd of 500 with a 10-yard shot from the right side past Huntington goalie Charlie Paar after cradling behind the cage.

"I just tucked, pulled and then let it go," Wieland said. "Luckily, there was no slide. It gave us a little bit of momentum at the end."

The physical, up-and-down thriller exemplified the fervor of two programs that are viable championship contenders: St. Anthony's in the CHSAA and Huntington in Suffolk Class B. The private school prevailed this time to earn bragging rights between the crosstown rivals.

"This was right from our neighborhood," St. Anthony's coach Keith Wieczorek said. "They kept coming right at us. This game will help us."

Rob Driscoll's one-timer off Max Pomper's feed extended St. Anthony's halftime lead to 7-3 with 7:52 left in the third quarter. It capped a three- goal spurt in a 2:33 span.

Pagano foreshadowed the dramatic ending when he stopped Logigian on a one-on-one with four seconds left in the second quarter to preserve St. Anthony's 4-3 halftime lead.

"He thought he had a shot," Huntington coach Paul McDermott said of the final-minute attempt. "At the time, you get upset that he didn't dish it, but he is just a kid."

Scrimmage Huntington @ Whitman
First scrimmage of the year was more of a practice for both teams. Teams worked fast break drills to start things off. The next part had both teams playing unsettled situations with players coming on to the field. The teams then went full field. Huntington used many different players at attack and midfield mixing combinations all day. On defense they used a lot of players but did not appear to play with a LSM. Since it was the first time both teams had practice on a field play was sloppy at times with miss passes and ground balls (soft ground hard to scoop). I did not keep track of goals or the score as Huntington was clearly out scoring Whitman with a lot of players putting the ball in the cage. Goalie play was split with Liedke and Paar coming in and out of the scrimmage. There was a lot of energy and many big hits and big misses. Over all it was a good workout and great to see them get on the field.
